Transportation Services

Elderly residents receive FREE transportation to important appointments (i.e. doctor’s visits, social security administration, immigration, etc.).  In addition to this, they receive daily transportation to and from GALATA’s Senior Center and weekly shopping trips (i.e. WalMart, local grocery/drug stores, etc.).

GALATA has a fleet of 3 vehicles, and has recently been approved by the Florida Department of Transportation to purchase another 15 passenger bus with a wheelchair lift.  Finally, we received bus passes and tokens from Miami-Dade Transit to provide to low-income individuals through our Transportation Disadvantaged Program

General Social Services

Clients that are younger than 60, qualify for services under our General Social Services Program.  Through this program they receive a wealth of information and referrals.  This includes but is not limited to: legal services, health benefits, immigration, literacy classes, financial counseling, mental health counseling, housing, school registration, voter registration, employment, bus passes/tokens, resume completion, job searches, education opportunities, and translation.

Health Services

GALATA helps clients apply for Government Subsidized insurances such as Medicaid, Medicare, and/or Florida KidCare. Clients also receive preventative care education, and receive referrals to Federal Qualified Health Clinics.  At these clinics, clients receive healthcare based on a Sliding Fee Scale.

Project LEAP

This is an after-school leadership program geared towards high-school students.  We promote peaceful conflict resolution, prevention of violence and drug abuse, and increased self-esteem.  In addition to monthly field trips, students attend workshops on topics such as "College Preparation", and "HIV/AIDS Prevention".  Students also attend a 3-day College Tour of Florida Colleges/Universities, a 2-day leadership retreat in the Florida Keys, and gain work experience through our Summer Employment component.

GALATA Out-of-School Program

For students ages 11-17 years old.  Students are provided tutoring, FCAT preparation, recreational activities, life skills training and much more.  They also have access to our Computer Lab complete with Internet access.  GALATA has collaborated with various Colleges and Universities (i.e. Florida International University, Miami-Dade College, and the University of Pennsylvania) to provide students with mentoring activities, drug prevention, and social skills training.  These students also receive free transportation from school to GALATA and from GALATA to their home.

 Other Community Events

In addition to the One People, One Community Festival, GALATA’s other community activities include: Back-to-School fairs, provision of school supplies to those in need, crime prevention and community empowerment workshops, securing holiday donations (Thanksgiving and Christmas), organizing relief efforts (i.e. securing donations for shipment to the Caribbean), College Tours, and Health Fairs.  GALATA is honored to serve our community, and is committed to improving the quality of life of our consumers.  We believe our programs fill a vital role in our community and speak to the issues that need to be addressed.
