Who we are...
GALATA is a social services agency which provides services indiscriminately to minorities and low income residents of Homestead and Florida City. Our clientele consists of Haitians, African Americans and Hispanics; however, the agency’s primary target is the severely disadvantaged and underserved Haitian refugee community. Generally, the programming needs of Haitian elders remain hidden by traditional undercounting by existing Census methodologies and/or due to the general lack of focus of mainstream agencies on this ethnic-based target population.
ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY & CAPACITY
Galata, Inc. is a tax-exempt, non-profit, 501(c)3 Corporation whose goal is to educate, inform and empower consumers by implementing a service program providing an array of quality-of-life improvement services, including, but not limited to, case management and a referral base for increased utilization of existing service providers in order for our clients to become self-sufficient.
GALATA is currently operating the only multi-cultural senior center in Homestead and Florida City where Haitian, African-American and Hispanic elders participate. The agency is best suited to address the needs of its clientele due to its multicultural and multilingual staff. Homestead and Florida City were severely hit by hurricane Andrew 10 years ago and because these communities are considered to be the poorest in Miami-Dade County, they became part of Miami-Dade County Office of Community and Economic Development’s Designated Empowerment and Enterprise Zone.
GALATA takes pride and truly believes in reaching out to all people - whether Anglo-American, African-American, Hispanic, or Haitian. Currently, Galata serves over 1000 people.
GALATA has sponsored the Annual “One people, One Community Multi-Cultural Street Festival” with The City of Florida City, The City of Homestead, the Metro-Dade Cultural Department, Commission District 9, as well as other local and corporate businesses within Miami-Dade County.
GALATA also has experience in hosting small workshops on topics that reflect the community at large. This includes topics such as HIV Aids awareness, Health Care and Kid Care services availability.
GALATA is a strong believer in collaboration. GALATA serves as a partner with various organizations such as MUJER, C-Born and Human Services Coalition of Miami-Dade County. GALATA is also an active member of the Haitian Elder Task Force, South Dade United Haitian Coalition, We Care, Miami Refugees Task Force and the Alliance for Aging, Inc, which meet monthly to discuss issues which affect our targeted population. GALATA’s staff regularly represents the South Dade Haitian community and other minorities in city and county level policy and strategic planning. |
