Youth Programs

GALATA works with at-risk children and youth from low-income families in the area of Homestead and Florida City by offering them an after-school leadership program that focus on education and self-esteem empowerment. 

As a tax-exempt, non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation, GALATA’s mission is to provide socially and culturally competent programs and health services to the disadvantaged Haitian population and other minority groups located in South Dade County by promoting economic self-sufficiency to improve their quality of life. 

GALATA provides services to local youth through a program called “Project LEAP: Leadership Development, Enrichment, Acculturation, & Prevention” as a major service to the Deep South Dade Haitian Community with will promote Haitian cultural development for the youth.  This program enables-- participating Haitian families, parents, young adults, teens, the elderly, and Haitian community leaders to share activities, ideas and challenges in a positive proactive environment as GALATA assists them in creating constructive solutions for the future as well as everyday challenges facing the Haitian family structure.  Project LEAP endeavors to positively affect youth and their families by promoting opportunities for pro-social norms, as well as pro-social involvement, and recognition for positive behavior. 

Long-term benefits:  Parents feel confident that children have a safe place after-school where they receive academic tutoring and exposure to professional development.  Long-term benefits include reduction of youth delinquency and involvement in drug, gang and crime. Participating youth will also demonstrate improved leadership and job-related communication skills, and will demonstrate increased knowledge in effective communication, paradigm awareness, conflict resolution, team building, and self-awareness skills.
